Zen Phoenix Yoga is proud and elated to host its second annual self-care-focused retreat, July 2023:

Tending the Self: An Everyday Practice

The steady and unrelenting pace of life as a working person, caregiver, parent, spouse, friend, etc. means that a lot of us spend most of our time meeting the needs of others.

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” Have you felt like an empty cup, recently? Have you been pouring from some unknown source, without knowing quite how, and feeling generally depleted?

If so, this retreat could be a much-deserved and needed pause for you.

Before you read any further, we at Zen Phoenix want you to know that we are prioritizing the accessibility of this retreat. We are aiming to extend affordable and simple self-care to as many as want and need it.

We will be offering this retreat on a sliding scale; whatever works for you works for us. If you would like a rate as a reference point, please reach out to us at zenphoenixyoga@gmail.com

More about Tending the Self: An Everyday Practice in Living Self Care.

There are so many valid ways to practice self-care. With this retreat held in scenic upstate New York, territory of the Onöndowa’ga:’ (Seneca) Nation, one of our goals is to collectively open our minds to new ways of Tending the Self, with humble practices such as:

  • Brewing a cup of tea from herbs you’ve just picked in an herb garden

  • Walking a wooded trail together in silence, allowing our minds to wander and our hearts to open; being with ourselves while with others

  • Learning how to give yourself a gentle Lymphatic Drainage Massage, which is a helpful tool in managing our body's fluid levels, boosting immunity, and ridding our body of toxins. It is also beneficial in transitioning our bodies into parasympathetic nervous system function: where our bodies rest and digest! Manual lymph drainage can assist us in reducing feelings of anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia when performed prior to bedtime.

  • Engaging in discussion about self-care with like-minded and supportive peers

  • Somatic shaking for an energetic release and boost

  • Rebounding therapy - a physical practice that is a beneficial activity for our lymphatic system as it causes gentle stimulation to the system by causing opening and closing of lymphatic valves which can increase lymphatic flow by as much as 15%. It also serves to stimulate core musculature which stimulates the deep lymphatic system.

  • The opportunity to visit with farm animals such as goats and chickens

And, of course…

  • Yoga. Yin, Vinyasa, Nidra: allowing us to tend to our many different needs.

With this retreat, we hope to create a space in which we can inspire one another (and ourselves) to tend to our needs, every single day.
